... of the 38th Battalion colour patch. .2) Rectangular frame in khaki... on a replica of the 38th Battalion colour patch. .2) Rectangular frame ...The banner and frame were carried by representatives of the 38th Battalion during parades..1) Rectangular red cloth banner with gold coloured fringing sewn to the bottom edge. Red cloth loops are sewn onto each side and the top to facilitate attachment to the metal frame - see .2). Printed on both sides in gold, black and white - '38 Battalion AIF'. The '38' is printed on a replica of the 38th Battalion colour patch. .2) Rectangular frame in khaki coloured tubular metal. Each corner is clamped and secured with bolts and wing nuts to allow for the frame to be dismantled. Items relate to Jack Grinton No 1043, 38th Batt AIF. The postcards document Grinton's visits to various UK, French and European sites of interest. The ephemera in the last section include booklets, sketches, souvenirs, programmes, paper money, photo wallets, letters, pay slips and Grinton's discharge certificate. Photographs and medals of brothers Leslie and James HANDLEY both killed in action in FRANCE 2458 Leslie Lionel HANDLEY was born at Benalla and enlisted at Wangaratta on 28/5/1915 aged 18 years. He served with the 14th Battalion and was killed in the field on 7/8/1916. He is buried at Pozieres in an unknown grave. 2813 James Albert HANDLEY was born at Williamstown and enlisted at Wangaratta/Melbourne on 3/10/1916 aged 29 years. He served with the 38th Battalion and was killed in the field on 18/7/1918. He is buried at Villiers-Brettoneux. Items relate to Jack Grinton No 1043, 38th Batt AIF. The photographs were taken during and after WW1. The series of postcards, some of which are labelled, were collected by Grinton. Pictures of 38th Battalion soldiers are depicted on a number of postcards. Other photographs and postcards feature scenes from France and the UK. Part of the Grinton Collection which included hundreds of negatives and developed photos taken by Jack Grinton during WW1. See also 1290.2P and 1291.2P. Frame 10. Photo 1. A group of Sergeants on the deck of the Karmala. Jack and Bert were the only Sergeants from the 45th quota from the original Battalion on the Karmala. There were two other Sergeants who had transferred to the 38th, one in Oct 1918, Sgt R. L. Glover from the 37th Batt and Sgt F. Perkins also from the 37th who transferred in April 1919. Both are or should be in the collection of photos. Photo 2. life on deck of the Karmalal. Photo 3. A group of nurses on the Karmala. In the family collection there are two faded sepia photos showing the others not in this negative. The negatives to these are missing. From the War Diary of the Karmala there were ten nurses on the Karmala and there are ten nurses in the photos. There was also the ship's Medical Officer who is hidden in this negative. The ship's S.M.O. was Captain C. P. Rosenthal from the 33rd Batt HQ. The place is Havre France and the date is early 1919 prior to leaving for England. 1st on the left we believe is Fred Lehman MM, 3rd from left is Sgt J Coffey. Some of the others are in other photos and although not identified we believe they are some of the senior Officers in the 38th Batt and who were in the 45th Quota.
